Why give?
-
Inclusion & Equality
Donating helps ensure that outdoor recreational opportunities are available to everyone, regardless of physical ability, age or economic status. This promotes a more inclusive society where all individuals have the chance to enjoy nature and participate in activities that many take for granted. Wheelable Wilderness provides Kentucky’s first and ONLY track wheelchair lending program, making all terrain wheelchairs and other needed equipment available to people so that access to the outdoors is possible for everyone!
-
Empowerment & Independence
Accessible outdoor recreation allows disabled individuals and the elderly to engage in activities that promote independence and self-reliance. This empowerment can lead to greater self-confidence and a more active, fulfilling life.
-
Breaking Down Barriers
Many outdoor spaces are not designed with accessibility in mind, limiting opportunities for those with disabilities or mobility issues. Funding helps create or adapt spaces to be more inclusive, ensuring that everyone can access and enjoy them and allows individuals to access needed adaptive equipment so they can enjoy outdoor recreation with their families and friends!
-
Improved Quality of Life
Outdoor recreation offers significant physical and mental health benefits. Kentucky's five-year Outdoor Recreation plan aims to promote healthy lifestyles through parks, playgrounds, and waterways. However, many of these spaces remain inaccessible to people with disabilities and seniors. Accessible opportunities like those provided by Wheelable Wilderness are vital for enhancing physical health, mental well-being, and social inclusion. Kentucky has the nation's second-highest disability rate among working-age individuals and ranks poorly in supporting caregivers and programs for individuals with disabilities. Wheelable Wilderness enhances quality of life and keeps people healthy!
-
Promoting Social Connection
Outdoor activities foster community and connection. Supporting accessible programs creates opportunities for social interaction, building a sense of community among participants. Intergenerational and inter-abled relationships are vital for healthy aging, preventing isolation and loneliness, and instilling purpose in older adults while fostering compassion in youth. These interactions strengthen communities and preserve stories and traditions. Wheelable Wilderness enhances these relationships and strengthens the community! 71% of parents of children with disabilities socialize less than once a month, with 33% rarely or never engaging in social activities (Michael Dragonetti). Wheelable Wilderness enables gatherings, reduces isolation, and helps families build resilience!
-
Conservation & Awareness
Supporting such nonprofits also promotes environmental stewardship. By involving more people in outdoor activities, especially those who might otherwise be excluded, there’s a greater awareness and appreciation for natural spaces, which can lead to more robust conservation efforts.

Wheelable Wilderness in Phases
Phase 1: Equipment Lending Program
We are thrilled to announce Kentucky's first and only Track wheelchair lending program! In addition to our flagship equipment, we are excited to share that various other mobility devices will also be available for lending. This includes shower chairs, manual Hoyer lifts, portable ramps, ROHO seat cushions, and other durable medical equipment (DME) as it becomes available.
Currently, we are in the initial phase of this initiative. At this stage, our program will focus on the launch of a select range of essential items. While we plan to offer a comprehensive array of equipment, some items, such as certain types of mobility devices and specialized equipment, will be introduced in later phases as we receive and integrate them into our inventory.
Phase 1 will include, but is not limited to, manual wheelchair rentals, Trackchair rentals, a variety of walkers, power wheelchair rentals, wheelchair charger rentals, shower chair rentals, and Hoyer lift rentals. We are committed to expanding our offerings to meet the diverse needs of our community and will keep you updated as additional equipment becomes available.
Phase 2: Barrier-free Campground Facilities
Building barrier-free campground facilities is essential for fostering an inclusive outdoor experience where everyone can enjoy nature's beauty. These facilities will include accessible restrooms, showers, and properly designed pathways that accommodate all mobility levels. Camp spots will be spacious enough to allow easy maneuvering for individuals using wheelchairs or other mobility aids, while picnic areas can feature adjustable tables for comfortable dining and socializing. Additionally, incorporating adaptive fire pits and accessible camping gear ensures that all visitors can immerse themselves in the joy of campfires and stargazing. By creating these thoughtful designs, we empower individuals with disabilities to connect with nature, fostering wonderful memories with family and friends.
Phase 3: Outdoor Recreational Activities & Events
In this exciting phase, we will offer a variety of engaging outdoor recreational activities designed to be accessible for everyone. Our beautifully maintained nature trails will welcome guests to explore the serene landscapes, while the peaceful fishing pond provides a tranquil spot for relaxation and enjoyment. Additionally, our sensory gardens will invite individuals to experience the beauty of nature through colors, scents, and textures. For gatherings, our accessible picnic area is perfect for sharing meals and creating cherished memories. We will also provide an inclusive meeting and event space where people can come together to collaborate and connect. Moreover, participants will have the opportunity to engage in nature-inspired art and music workshops that stimulate creativity and collaboration. Through special activities and events, we aim to foster a sense of community and encourage everyone to enjoy the great outdoors.
